As a nutritionist and naturopath, I am always looking for a more natural remedy to my family or friends ailments. Recently, my daughter got a sore throat and cough.
To often, people head to the doctor at the first sign of a cough or cold in our little ones. We have forgotten that a cold or the flu just needs to run its course and its a sure sign our bodies are tired and need more rest. Lets face it, often all the doctor says is “get plenty of rest, and drink lots of fluids”, others are too quick to prescribe antibiotics. We all know that antibiotics are being prescribed at alarming rates. Now I’m NOT advocating not going to your doctor if you are unwell, but there are some things that your body can fight off itself with the aide of good nutrition.
I haven’t had the need for antibiotics for years and years, since approximately the same time I started eating a nutritionally balanced whole food diet. Thats not to say that I haven’t suffered from a cold or a small throat in that time, but I looked after myself on the very odd occasion I did by eating super well and drinking lots of healing drinks. I do have to say that since eating this way, I rarely get colds, flu’s or the bugs that come home from school. My system is able to fight them off early with its own antibodies it can produce, because it is supported nutritionally.
That said, we still do get occasional coughs in the house. My daughter has just picked up a cough and sore throat recently and I thought it a great opportunity to assist her through this with one of my tried and tested remedies. My kids didn’t react well with pharmacy bought cough syrups in the past, and its not that they never liked the super sweet taste (hate to think what makes them so sweet). Most of these conventional syrup’s though, only act to suppress and relieve the cough and not to actually get rid of it like many of us believe. This remedy helps to speed up the course of the cough, to eliminate it from the body (while relieving it), rather than suppress it. So I made up a batch of this Natural Cough Syrup.
Natural Cough Syrup
1/4 cup natural honey
2 tbs organic coconut oil
Juice of one small lemon
- Place all the ingredients in a small saucepan.
- Heat on medium and stir to combine.
- Simmer for approximately 5 mins.
- Store in a clean, sterilised jar in the pantry or the fridge.
- You can give a child 1 teaspoon 2-3 times a day, or an adult 1 tablespoon.
It works! The syrup coats the dry throat, to prevent that itchy feeling, that leads to the cough.
Honey has natural antiseptic and antibacterial properties. Lemons are rich in vitamin C and flavonoids which work against infections (like the common cold and flu), and they also boast antibacterial properties. Coconut oil supports the bodies immunity with its healthy fats containing anti-fungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties. The three combined together are a force to be reckoned with.
Since I was little, my mum was always telling me to drink a hot honey and lemon drink, its like one of those old wives tales that gets passed down. It worked back then, why wouldn’t it work now just as well. If you also have a fussy little one, this syrups sweet and sour mix should be very well received. My daughter in fact, asked for more the first time she tried it.
You could also administer is as a preventative in the cold and flu season, as it helps to boost and support the immune system. Then, if a cold or flu bug does enter your home, their little bodies will be that much stronger and be able to fight it off that much sooner, without the need for a trip to the doctors.
